South Carolina 2A Wrestling State Dual Championship 2006-2007

The 4th Round (Semi-Finals) of the 2A State Dual Championships for Friday, February 9 looks like this:

Upper State Bracket

#3 Walhalla (1st seed) vs. #4 Crescent (3rd seed) at Lugoff-Elgin High School 8:00 p.m.
Let's start with how big these two schools are:
The 2006-2007 School Year - Attendance Figures for 195 state wide schools
#97 out of 195 schools - Walhalla 946 students (Walhalla is the largest 2A school)
#128 out of 195 schools - Crescent 727 students

Then we can check out the team trophy count:
Team State Championships - Crescent 2, Walhalla 0
Team State Runner-ups - Crescent 1, Walhalla 2

Individual accomplishments need to get thrown in too (wrestlers counted in only one category):
State 1st in the lineup - Crescent 0, Walhalla 0
State 2nd in the lineup - Crescent 0, Walhalla 1
State 3rd in the lineup - Crescent 1, Walhalla 1
State 4th in the lineup - Crescent 1, Walhalla 0
State Qualifiers lineup - Crescent 3, Walhalla 2

This is Walhalla’s first trip to the 2A Upper State finals since 2002. Crescent was there last year
and went all the way to winning the 2A State Finals. This match-up is a rematch from January 10,
when Walhalla defeated Crescent 37-29 on Walhalla's home mat. A lot of time has passed since then!
In the last round of the playoffs, Crescent won a tough matchup with Woodruff!
For Walhalla in round 3, it was Walhalla's little guys coming up big against Ninety-Six!
Walhalla is led by #1 ranked 103 Andrew Rankin (Fr.), undefeated 112 Ethan Lecroy (Jr., 2006 103 3rd),
130 Andrew Vaughn (Jr., 2005 103 SQ), 135 Jared Holcombe (Jr., 2006 130 2nd) and
140 Zach Satterfield (Sr., 2006 140 SQ, 2005 130 SQ). Coach Rick Somerville has the rest of
the Walhalla lineup looking solid. Crescent is led by 125 Cody McCall (So., 2006 112 SQ), #1 ranked 135
Justin Walker (Sr., 2006 130 4th), 152 Nick Horne (Sr., 2004 130 SQ), 189 Todd Tabor (Sr., 2006 189 SQ)
and #1 ranked 215 Steven Earwood (Sr., 2006 215 3rd). Coach Chris Strickland has long stopped savoring
last year's state title and masterfully been pulling this lineup together to peak at the right time.
SCMAT Prediction - Crescent wins

Lower State Bracket

#1 Loris (1st seed) vs. #7 Cheraw (2nd seed) at Lugoff-Elgin High School 6:00 p.m.
Let's start with how big these two schools are:
The 2006-2007 School Year - Attendance Figures for 195 state wide schools
#109 out of 195 schools - Cheraw 887 students
#115 out of 195 schools - Loris 838 students

Then we can check out the team trophy count:
Team State Champions - Cheraw 1, Loris 2
Team State Runer-ups - Cheraw 0, Loris 0

Individual accomplishments need to get thrown in too (wrestlers counted in only one category):
State 1st in the lineup - Cheraw 0, Loris 1
State 2nd in the lineup - Cheraw 0, Loris 0
State 3rd in the lineup - Cheraw 0, Loris 0
State 4th in the lineup - Cheraw 2, Loris 1
State Qualifiers lineup - Cheraw 3, Loris 3

Coach Thomas Britt's Loris squad is led by -
119 Terrance Cox (So., 2006 103 SQ)
145 Lionel Peoples (Sr., 2006 135 SQ)
152 Alfonzo Oliver (So., 2006 145 SQ)
#1 ranked 171 Jonathan Outley (Sr., 2006 160 4th)
#1 ranked 189 Jonathan Willard (Jr., 2006 189 1st, 2005 171 1st)

Coach Brad Porter's Cheraw squad is led by -
112 Raffeal Burkette (Jr., 2006 103 4th)
125 Shaw Wallace (Sr., 2006 119 SQ, 2005 112 SQ)
130 Kendario Lewis (Jr., 2006 125 SQ, 2005 119 SQ)
171 Kenyatta Gary (So., 2006 171 SQ)
189 Desmond Chambers (Jr., 2006 189 4th)

This Lower State show-down will prove to be just as exciting as the Upper State battle.
Any of these four teams could be in the Finals Saturday and completely deserving of being
there. If we had to pick one team, going with the #1 ranked team seems fit ...
SCMAT Prediction - Loris wins
