South Carolina 3A Wrestling State Dual Championship 2006-2007

The 3rd Round (Semi-Finals) of the 3A State Dual Championships for Friday, February 9 looks like this:

Upper State Bracket

#2 Eastside (1st seed) vs. #3 Lugoff-Elgin (2nd seed) at Lugoff-Elgin High School 8:00 p.m.
Let's start with how big these two schools are:
The 2006-2007 School Year - Attendance Figures for 195 state wide schools
#49 out of 195 schools - Lugoff-Elgin 1,476 students (Lugoff-Elgin is the largest 3A school)
#65 out of 195 schools - Eastside 1,287 students

Then we can check out the team trophy count:
Team State Championships - Eastside 5, Lugoff-Elgin 5
Team State Runner-ups - Eastside 3, Lugoff-Elgin 5

Individual accomplishments need to get thrown in too (wrestlers counted in only one category):
State 1st in the lineup - Eastside 5, Lugoff-Elgin 1
State 2nd in the lineup - Eastside 0, Lugoff-Elgin 2
State 3rd in the lineup - Eastside 0, Lugoff-Elgin 1
State 4th in the lineup - Eastside 0, Lugoff-Elgin 1
State Qualifiers lineup - Eastside 0, Lugoff-Elgin 0

On Wednesday night of competitive Dual action we saw the Eagles beat the Red Raiders in AAA wrestling.

Coach Jack Kosmicki's Eastside squad is led by:
#1 ranked 112 Eddie Coles (So., 2006 103 1st)
119 Andrew Jenkins (Jr., 2006 112 1st)
#1 ranked 130 Chris Teague (Jr.)
140 Bryce Martin (Jr., 2006 119 4th, 2005 103 1st)
145 Corbin Martin (Jr., 2006 125 1st, 2005 112 1st)
#1 ranked 189 J.C. Oddo (Sr., 2006 189 1st, 2005 171 1st, 2004 135 1st)

Coach Kevin Knoerr's Lugoff-Elgin squad is led by:
#1 ranked 103 Justin McClester (So., 2006 103 2nd)
#1 ranked 145 Deral Brown (Jr., 2006 135 1st, 2005 130 4th)
#1 ranked 152 Justin Ross (So., 2006 145 4th)
160 Campbell Connell (So., 2006 160 2nd)
285 Aaron Counts (Jr., 2006 275 3rd, 2005 275 SQ)

Is this the current equivalent of a Carolina-Clemson rivalry? These two teams seem to have the
ability to meet up every year and eliminate one or the other from the title hunt. This year is
no different! Many think Eastside is down but can squeeze in two more wins to pull out their
fourth straight team title. Many others think Lugoff-Elgin will be the victor, and I honestly
believe L-E will be in the match down to the last whistle ending the 14th match in the 3rd period.
with a score check at the table. I go with a slight edge to recent history over the fantastic
home mat advantage!
SCMAT Prediction - Eastside wins

Lower State Bracket

#1 North Myrtle Beach (1st seed) vs. #4 Hilton Head (2nd seed) at Lugoff-Elgin High School 6:00 p.m.
Let's start with how big these two schools are:

#63 out of 195 schools - North Myrtle Beach 1,295 students
#76 out of 195 schools - Hilton Head 1,175 students

State 3rd in the lineup - North Myrtle Beach 2, Hilton Head 0
State 4th in the lineup - North Myrtle Beach 2, Hilton Head 0

In the last round, Hilton Head's Sunkins topped his foe to secure a narrow victory over Chapin.

171 Cavin Sunkins (Jr., 2006 171 2nd)
189 Alex Rivchun (Sr.)
215 Mike Heyward (Sr.)

This match will be exciting but I also feel it will be a close double digit advantage for the Beach ...
SCMAT Prediction - North Myrtle Beach wins
