Wrestling Camps and Clinics - Summer 2010 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ HIGHLANDER WRESTLING THE TOUGHEST SPORT IN SCHOOL COACHES: Hank Wall, John McCardell, Michael Devita Contact info: HWall@BrunerPowell.com Phone: 803-479-3607 May 25, 2010 Christos Kurios! Re: Highlander Wrestling Academy Dear Parents of Boys in rising grades 3-5 and rising grades 6-8: We will host our first Highlander Summer Wrestling Academy on the campus of Heathwood Hall the week of June 7-11. We plan to roll out our two mats in the air conditioned athletic center and teach two sessions daily to young men who may have never been exposed to the great sport of wrestling. We will teach rising 3rd, 4th and 5th graders from 1pm to 2:45 pm and rising 6th, 7th and 8th graders from 3pm to 4:45pm. The final day of the week will culminate in a fun tournament! The cost of this program will be $75.00 and it is designed to introduce elementary and middle school boys to the basic fundamentals of folk-style wrestling. No previous experience is required and wrestling is not offered as a part of the physical education program at Heathwood, so this would be a great opportunity to see if your son might enjoy the toughest sport! Several of our varsity wrestlers will assist me in teaching the basics and please consider enrolling your sons in this program this summer. More information and online registration is available from the Heathwood Web site. Thank you for your support of Highlander Athletics, and have a great break! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ CutNoMore Camp in N.C. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Limestone Camp Brochure 2010 - June 16-20, 2010 Hello, I am trying to spread the word about the 5 day intensive camp being held at Limestone College. Thank you for your time and interest, Donald Cummings Assistant Wrestling Coach Limestone College 1115 College Dr Gaffney SC 29340 dcummings@limestone.edu ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.scmat.com/penn state 2010 camp brochure.pdf South Carolina coaches/wrestling families, South Carolina wrestling, along with the entire southeast, is being noticed on a national level. You have great coaching in this state that is producing nationally competitive individuals and teams. Several collegiate coaches have expressed interest in hosting camps in the southeast for the purpose of exposing their programs. Coach Cael Sanderson is the premier clinician in the nation and he was the obvious choice to further the progression of improvement and success in this area. PLEASE UNDERSTAND o This is NOT a camp that just holds coach Sanderson’s name. This is Cael Sanderson’s Penn State training camp; structured and hosted by Coach Sanderson and the Penn State Wrestling Team. o Coach Sanderson has invited Coach Pat Popolizio of the Nationally Ranked Div. I Binghamton Bearcats to attend as a clinician. That gives camp participants exposure to 2 Div I wrestling programs that are fully funded with scholorships. o This is a camp that is local to Atlanta (Rome, GA) with an effective cost structure in a cost per day comparison. If you have any question about the camp, I am the local contact. Please feel free to contact me via phone or email. Brochure is at the link above. Jamill Kelly has perhaps the greatest success story ever of wrestler who came up short his whole wrestling career until the 2004 Olympics came around. Nate Carr hails from the most decorated wrestling family in the history of the United States. Jamill Kelly: Jamill Kelly is the modern day Cinderella story. After a disappointing college career Jamill had no expectations of competing, however as fate would have it he fell back in the sport. The mental barriers and doubts that existed in college at times would creep back into Jamill’s head, but when it counted Jamill was able to transform into a wrestler that performed when it truly counted. As a high school wrestler, he was never a state champion. He placed fourth at the California state championships. As a division I wrestler at Oklahoma state, he was never an All-American at the NCAA championships. Jamill Kelly was however, the 2004 Athens Olympic freestyle silver medalist at 66 kgs. He is currently the Dallas Dynamite Wrestling club coach. Nate Carr: Nate Carr's wrestling career got off to a good start when he posted an astonishing 115-7 record at Erie Tech, including a Pennsylvania state title. He was a three time NCAA Champion for Iowa State University, (1981-83) in the 150-pound weight class. Among his many international accomplishments was a bronze medal at the 1988 Olympics. He won the 1986 World Cup Championship and the 1986 Pan-American Championship. Carr was a three-time US National Freestyle Champion and won the 1990 Goodwill Games Championship. Carr grew up in Erie, PA in a family of 16 children. Five of these, including Nate, would become All-American wrestlers (an NCAA record) and two, again including Nate, would compete in the Olympic Games. Fletcher Carr, one of Nate’s brothers, was a two-time NCAA Division II national champion at the University of Tampa and was head coach at Kentucky. Jimmy Carr, another of Nate’s brothers, was 17 when he earned a spot at 114.5 pounds on the 1972 Olympic freestyle team. Jimmy is considered by many to be the greatest high school wrestler ever. Nate is currently the Director of Prodigy wrestling {training center} in Springboro, Ohio Camp Schedule: 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Instruction 11:00 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. – lunch break (lunch not provided) 12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. Instruction application form Wrestler’s Name___________________________________________ Parent’s Names____________________________________________ Address__________________________________________________City_______________State_____Zip_________ Home Phone_________________________________ Email Address________________________________________________ Parents Work Number_______________________________________ Emergency__________________________ Shirt Size________ Contact____________________________________________ Birth date______________School Name______________ Grade for 2009-10 school year_____________ details of the camp Option A: (Early Bird) $100 + free camp t-shirt if we receive full payment by: 5/31/2010 Option B: $125 (camp shirt not included) if received after 5/31/2010 Shirts available for $15 charge on day of camp if payment not received by early bird date. Penn State 2010 Summer Wrestling Camp Brochure - Berry College, GA this July Tom Green (Head Youth Coach at Centennial - Roswell, GA) and I wanted to be among the first to share some exciting news with the SC Wrestling community. Cael Sanderson and the Penn St Nittany Lion's wrestling program will be bringing a fully operational summer camp to Berry College, GA this July. This means Cael and his staff will be at the camp for its entire duration. This is the only other off campus camp that Sanderson and his staff are contemplating in 2010. That being said, wrestlers will have to head to Penn St or Berry College GA to see the Sanderson and his staff this summer. The camp's will include the PENN ST Wrestling Staff, as well as several of their wrestlers. Cael plans on making this an annual event; however, we need help spreading the word through the Southeast wrestling community. We only have a partial email list of SC coaches. We'd appreciate if you could respond to this email by sending us your name and school. If you have a state coaches contact list, that would be extremely helpful as well. Getting this camp organized is only half the battle, spreading the word is the other half. Please see the attached literature above for details. The dates that have been worked out are June 5, 6 and 7th. Hotel accommodations and lunches are still being figured out, but we need at least 100 wrestlers to make this happen. The price is still being discussed, but it should fall somewhere between $220-$250 per wrestler.
