Weekend of Upsets!

It happened again this weekend, just like all season, the Upset that makes us go "Whoa!"

It wasn't just one higher seed that fell ... we saw a plenty fall!

Dutch Fork to Fort Dorchester
Dutch Fork to Lugoff-Elgin
Matt Leach to Jeff Smith
Danny Curtis to Randy Mathews
Ray Steele to Deral Brown

The entire season has had surprises though if we look at it ...
Bryant Blanton earlier this season loses to JC Oddo (maybe this wasn't a total surprise)
Lance McClester loses to William Watson
Mitchell Alston loses to Ray Steele and others
Neil Selke loses to Greg Matricciano when Selke bumps up a weight (remember their battles
3 years ago when they were #1, #2 at 103 lbs. though both failed to make weight before
State clearing the way for Mauldin's Elliott Courter to win the state title.)

Of the top 9 seniors in our state we wrote about earlier this season (see below),
only a few are left with an undefeated season still in reach.

Beaten at least once this season ---
Matt Leach - Eastside (Sr., 2005 125 1st, 2004 103 1st, 2003 103 1st)
Bryant Blanton - Summerville (Sr., 2005 171 1st, 2004 160 1st, 2003 152 2nd)
Corneilius Selke - Dutch Fork (Sr., 2005 119 1st, 2004 112 1st, 2003 103 SQ)
Lance McClester - Lugoff-Elgin (Sr., 2005 135 1st, 2004 125 1st)
Danny Curtis - Chesterfield (Sr., 2005 119 1st, 2004 112 1st)
Freeman Cooler - Bamberg-Ehrhardt (Sr., 2005 130 1st, 2004 130 1st, 2003 119 3rd)

Still undefeated? We have not heard of a defeat yet, but tell us if one occured.
Brantley Hooks - Byrnes (Sr., 2005 145 1st, 2004 130 1st, 2003 119 4th)
Tyler Thompson - Spring Valley (Sr., 2005 112 1st, 2004 103 1st, 2003 103 2nd)
Derek Royster - Woodruff (Sr., 2005 145 1st, 2004 140 1st, 2003 145 SQ)

Who are some other Seniors with impressive performances on the Mat this season,
with not even 1 state title to their credit (yet)---
Jeff Smith of Mauldin
Randy Mathews of Carolina Forest
William Watson of Lexington
Greg Matricciano of Summerville
Lance Wactor of Summerville
Jamal McNeil of Berkeley

Great seasons so far for these guys!

But, it is the season of surprises, and I have a feeling we haven't seen the last upset!
